The sovereign denomination traces its origins to Henry VII's 1489 issue — the first English coin to bear that name — making 2024 a plausible marker for 535 years of continuous, if interrupted, tradition. Gibraltar's role here is purely jurisdictional convenience; the territory has issued legal tender commemoratives under British Crown authority since the 1970s, allowing minting programs that the Royal Mint itself would not pursue.
