| Obverse description | Quarter-circle segment cut from a Spanish colonial silver cob or milled coinage, bearing the Type III rectangular countermark of Tortola applied in the upper field. The countermark displays the legend TORTOLA in bold, deeply impressed capital letters within a recessed rectangular cartouche. The underlying host coin's original design is largely obscured by wear and the cutting, though traces of the original Spanish colonial imagery remain visible in the lower field. This countermark was applied by local authorities to validate the cut piece for circulation as two shillings in the British Virgin Islands currency system. |
