Additional information

Uganda's independence from Britain came in 1962, and by the late 1960s the government was aggressively pursuing commemorative issues to build both revenue and international profile. This piece was struck to mark Pope Paul VI's visit to Uganda in July 1969 — the first papal visit to Africa in history. The Vatican and the Ugandan government both held considerable interest in the optics of that moment, and the coinage followed predictably.

KM#8 is catalogued across two date years, though the distinction between 1969 and 1970 strikes carries no known die difference.
