Obverse description The obverse features the first definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, modelled by Mary Gillick, depicted as a laureate and draped bust facing right, wearing a laurel wreath in her hair with a ribbon tied at the nape of the neck. The portrait is rendered in a refined, classical style characteristic of Gillick's work, with the queen's hair dressed and pinned. The circumferential Latin legend reads '+ ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA BRITT:OMN:REGINA', separated from the effigy by a continuous beaded border. The legend begins with a Greek cross at the top of the coin and runs clockwise around the field.
