Reverse description Central field displays the crowned shield of Scotland bearing the rampant lion within a double tressure flory-counter-flory, rendered in the hammered style typical of the Edinburgh Mint's fourth coinage. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. The surrounding legend, enclosed within a beaded border, reads · IVST · THRONVM · FIRMAT ·, the motto affirming that justice strengthens the throne. The overall strike and flan exhibit characteristic irregularities consistent with mid-17th century hammered Scottish coinage.
