Obverse description Crude hammered depiction of Scarborough Castle at centre of the field, rendered in high relief with battlemented towers and a central gateway arch visible. Below the castle, the denomination is expressed in abbreviated Latin form: 'S' (solidi/shillings) to the left with 'II' beneath, and 'D' (denarii/pence) to the right with 'VV' (representing 10, i.e. two V's) beneath. The flan is irregular and lozenge-shaped, typical of emergency siege coinage produced under wartime conditions at Scarborough during the Royalist garrison's defence of the castle.
