China's rationing coupon system, which ran from the mid-1950s through the early 1990s, required separate grain ration books at the provincial level — national coupons could not be exchanged for food across all borders, and provincial stamps like this one were strictly non-negotiable outside Sichuan. The 1973 date places this squarely in the later Cultural Revolution period, when the grain bureau apparatus remained one of the few functioning administrative structures with any real enforcement power over daily life.
Sichuan provincial food stamps from this period are among the more common survivals, given the province's size and population, but the 2-shi-liang denomination — a small fractional unit — saw heavy actual use and rarely survived in clean condition.
