| Additional information |
Tonga's decimal coinage was introduced in 1967, replacing the pound system as part of a broader Pacific-region decimalization wave. These early bronzes were struck at the Royal Mint in London. Taufa'ahau Tupou IV had assumed the throne just two years prior following the death of his mother, Queen Salote, who had ruled for nearly half a century and remained far more internationally recognized than her son at the time of issue.
