| Additional information |
The Sovereign Military Order of Malta issues its own coinage not as circulating currency but under a formal papal recognition of sovereignty that predates most modern nation-states — the Order has held sovereign status in international law continuously since the medieval period, despite losing physical control of Malta to Napoleon in 1798. Angelo de Mojana di Cologna served as 77th Grand Master from 1962 until his death in 1988, one of the longer tenures of the modern era. The .986 fineness is notably purer than most contemporary silver issues from sovereign mints.
