Additional information

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta occupies a peculiar position in numismatics: a non-territorial sovereign entity issuing legal tender coins redeemable within an organization that governs no land. The Order lost Malta itself to Napoleon in 1798 and has operated without physical territory ever since, headquartered in Rome under a 1998 arrangement with Italy. These silver issues of the early 1970s were struck primarily for collectors rather than circulation, the Order having no population to circulate them among.

The .986 fineness is notably purer than standard circulation silver of the period.
