Additional information

Ferdinand of Bavaria held the Bishopric of Münster from 1612 until his death in 1650, accumulating ecclesiastical offices across the northwest — he simultaneously held Cologne, Hildesheim, Paderborn, and Liège at various points. The years 1640–1648 place this issue squarely within the final, grinding phase of the Thirty Years' War, when Westphalian territory was repeatedly crossed by armies and coinage quality across the region deteriorated sharply under the financial strain of sustained conflict.

The Peace of Westphalia, negotiated partly in Münster itself from 1644 onward, was concluded in 1648 — the closing year of this type's production run.
