Reverse description The crowned Virgin Mary, depicted standing in three-quarter view and cradling the Christ Child in her left arm, occupies an oval beaded inner border. Beneath the Madonna, a small shield bearing the Hamburg nettleleaf divides the date 1524. The circular legend runs along the outer edge within a beaded border, invoking the Virgin as protectress of the city in a devotional formula standard to Hanseatic Marian coinage of this period.
