The 2000 issue commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the Supreme Court of India, which held its inaugural sitting on 28 January 1950 — just two days before the Constitution came into force. The court inherited jurisdiction from the Federal Court of India, itself a creation of the Government of India Act 1935, and absorbed its pending caseload on the first day of the Republic.
