Additional information

Sri Lanka's Employees' Provident Fund, established under Act No. 15 of 1958, became one of the largest provident funds in Asia — at certain points managing assets equivalent to a significant share of the country's GDP. Dedicating a circulation coin to it in 2008 was a pointed political gesture, the government using the currency itself to reinforce the fund's public legitimacy during a period when EPF investments in government securities were under scrutiny.
