Sri Lanka's Air Force was established in 1950, growing directly out of the Royal Ceylon Air Force which itself had been formed in 1951 — meaning the "Platinum Jubilee" framing of a 2011 issue commemorating 60 years is the more defensible date, marking the transition to an independent national force after the end of British Ceylon. Commemorative circulation issues on nickel plated steel from the Central Bank during this period were typically produced in modest quantities with limited archival mintage documentation.
