Zaslavl — one of Belarus's oldest towns, founded according to chronicle sources in the late 10th century by Vladimir the Great for his exiled wife Rogneda — has issued its own coinage references before in Belarusian commemorative series. The Transfiguration Church there is a rare surviving example of defensive sacred architecture, built into the town's fortification system. Belarus has consistently used its circulation commemorative bimetallic programme to document regional architectural heritage that receives little international coverage.
