This coin was issued on the fortieth anniversary of Gagarin's April 12, 1961 flight — a date the Soviet Union had already institutionalized as Cosmonautics Day. The commemorative program it belongs to was one of the Bank of Russia's more sustained efforts of that period, pairing bimetallic and base-metal issues across multiple denominations to mark the anniversary.
Gagarin died in a MiG-15 crash in March 1968, never living to see the Moon landing he had been training toward.
