Part of the "Cities of Military Glory" series issued to mark the 55th anniversary of victory in the Second World War, this coin honors Smolensk — a city that changed hands multiple times between German and Soviet forces between 1941 and 1943, suffering near-total destruction in the process. The German capture in July 1941 opened the road to Moscow; its recapture by Soviet forces in September 1943 was one of the pivotal reversals of the Eastern Front.
