This coin is part of a Russian Federation commemorative series honoring commanders of the 1812 Patriotic War, issued in the lead-up to the 183rd anniversary of Napoleon's disastrous Moscow campaign. Kutuzov is the series' central figure — it was his strategy of deliberate retreat and scorched-earth attrition, not battlefield victory, that ultimately collapsed the Grande Armée's logistics before the Russian winter finished the job.
The .500 fineness is characteristic of Bank of Russia commemorative issues from this period, a cost-driven decision reflecting the economic turbulence of mid-1990s Russia.
