Lida Castle, built by Grand Duke Gediminas beginning around 1323, is one of the few surviving Gothic fortifications from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It withstood Mongol raids in 1258 and served as a refuge for the young Jagiellonian kings during the fourteenth century. Belarus has issued a sustained series of bimetallic circulating commemoratives honoring its architectural heritage, of which this is one entry — practical coins intended to move through commerce rather than sit in cabinets.
