Nesvizh Castle, seat of the Radziwill family for over three centuries, was seized by the Soviet authorities in 1939 following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and the subsequent Soviet occupation of eastern Poland. The Radziwills — one of the most powerful magnate dynasties in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania — lost the estate permanently, and the castle served variously as a sanatorium and Nazi headquarters before falling into severe disrepair. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, which directly prompted Belarus's sustained series of architectural commemoratives in the years following.
