Reverse description The copper-nickel plated steel centre displays the large numeral '2' dominating the field, with the Cyrillic denomination legend 'рублі' inscribed across the upper portion of the numeral in a stylised manner. The brass-plated steel outer ring is decorated with the traditional Belarusian 'Bahach' ornamental pattern in relief, representing the national pursuit of happiness and freedom. Small decorative snowflake-like folk motifs are interspersed within the ring at the cardinal points.

Additional information

Belarus introduced a bimetallic rouble coinage series in 2009 partly as a response to chronic small-denomination inflation that had rendered lower-value coins essentially worthless in daily transactions. The National Bank had struggled for years to stabilize a currency that lost catastrophic value during the 1990s — at its worst, the Belarusian rouble had depreciated so severely that the country briefly considered monetary union with Russia as the only viable exit. These higher-denomination coins were a deliberate signal of stabilization, however fragile that proved: a further devaluation crisis hit in 2011.
