Additional information

Gustav II Adolf had been on the Swedish throne less than three years when this piece was struck, having inherited a kingdom simultaneously at war with Denmark, Russia, and Poland. The 1617 Peace of Stolbova — concluded that same year — ended the war with Russia and secured Swedish control of Ingria and Kexholm, effectively cutting Russia off from the Baltic. The coin enters the record at a moment of genuine geopolitical consolidation.

The 2 riksdaler denomination was never a coin of everyday commerce. Issues of this weight and size functioned as presentation pieces and trade instruments, and surviving examples rarely show meaningful circulation wear for that reason.
