Ali III ruled as Bey of Tunis under the French Protectorate established in 1881, making this coinage a direct product of the political reorganization that followed the Treaty of Bardo. The Tunis mint continued striking in his name, but effective financial authority had already shifted to Paris — the coins circulated under a ruler whose sovereignty was increasingly nominal.
KM#207 was struck across multiple years within the reign, and die quality varied noticeably across the series.
