Obverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting the traditional crowned escutcheon with the five quinas (bezants) arranged in a cross pattern, surrounded by the castles of the bordure. The shield is rendered in a somewhat crude style characteristic of colonial Goa mint production. The design is presented without a surrounding legend, filling the flan within a plain border.
