Obverse description Bare-headed portrait bust of Rafael Carrera facing left, engraver's name FRENER inscribed in small letters below the truncation. The circumferential legend reads RAFAEL CARRERA Pte DE LA R. DE GUATEMALA. The Type IV Salvadoran countermark — a capital letter R within a beaded circle of approximately 5 mm diameter — is applied over the lower portion of the portrait in the field. The coin's outer border is defined by a toothed milled rim.
