| Obverse description | The obverse of the host coin displays a laureate draped bust of Joseph Napoleon facing left, with the legend IOSPH. NAP. around the left periphery and COSTA RICA DEI GRATIA around the right, and the date 1811 in the exergue. Superimposed upon the left field is the Type III Costa Rican counterstamp consisting of a small rectangular punch bearing a female head in left profile surmounted by the legend COSTA RICA and the denomination 2 R below, applied by the Costa Rican government to validate the coin for domestic circulation. The host coin is a Spanish 4 Reales piece struck during the Napoleonic era. |
