Paraguay in 1868 was in the final, catastrophic phase of the War of the Triple Alliance — a conflict that would kill an estimated 60–70% of the country's total population and nearly 90% of its adult male population. That the national mint was attempting to produce coinage at all during this period is itself remarkable.
