Obverse description Central field occupied by the combined royal arms of Castile and Leon, quartered with castle and lion rampant, surmounted by a crown, all within a beaded inner circle. The mintmark of Toledo appears to the left of the shield and the denomination mark II to the right. A Latin legend in Gothic characters encircles the design in the outer ring, referencing Ferdinand and Isabella by the Grace of God. The flan is irregular in shape, as is characteristic of hammered coinage of the period, with some weakness at the margins.
