Obverse description Central field displays the quartered royal shield of Ferdinand and Isabella, combining the castles of Castile and the lions of León in alternating quarters, with the eagle of Aragon and the chains of Navarre incorporated into the design, all surmounted by an ornate crown. A pomegranate device appears at the base of the shield, symbolising Granada. The shield is encircled by a beaded inner ring, with the royal legend running continuously around the outer periphery in raised Gothic-style Latin lettering.
