Reverse description The crowned Royal Arms of Spain, quartered with castles and lions and bearing a central escutcheon with the Bourbon fleur-de-lis, occupies the center of the field. The shield is flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each surmounted by a crown, representing the Strait of Gibraltar. The circular legend • HISPAN • ET IND • REX • NG • 2R • M • runs around the periphery, incorporating the mint mark NG (Nueva Guatemala), denomination 2R, and assayer initial M. A toothed border encircles the design.
