| Obverse description | Quartered royal arms of Castile and León surmounted by an imperial crown occupying the central field, with castles in the first and fourth quarters and lions rampant in the second and third quarters. The assayer's initials appear to either side of the shield within the inner circle. The circular legend, partially visible due to the irregular flan, reads KAROLVS ET IOHANA R, identifying the joint monarchs Charles I and Joanna. A beaded inner border frames the central device. |

| Reverse description | Two crowned Pillars of Hercules, representing the limits of the known world, flank a central banner bearing the inscription PLVS (here rendered as PIVS on this specimen), a reference to the motto PLVS VLTRA (Further Beyond). The pillars are each surmounted by a royal crown and encircled by dotted or plain rings depending on the variety. The surrounding legend HISPANIARVM ET INDIARVM, Of the Spains and the Indies, runs within a beaded border along the periphery of the irregular flan. |
