| Obverse description | Central field features the arms of the Estados Unidos de Colombia: a shield divided into three sections depicting a condor with spread wings at the top, a striped section in the center, and a mountainous coastal landscape at the base, all enclosed within a wreath of laurel and oak branches tied at the bottom. The circumferential legend ESTADOS UNIDOS DE COLOMBIA arcs around the upper periphery in bold raised Latin lettering. A row of six-pointed stars runs along the lower border inside the rim, framing the design with decorative regularity. The overall relief is moderately bold, consistent with milled coinage of the Popayán Mint in this period. |

The Estados Unidos de Colombia — the federated state that preceded the more centralized República de Colombia established by the 1886 constitution — maintained a notoriously fragmented monetary system through the 1870s and 1880s, with individual states occasionally striking their own coinage. The 1880 federal issues like this one were part of an effort to impose uniformity on that chaos, though the effort largely failed before the decade closed.
The 2 Reales denomination was already anachronistic by 1880, a colonial-era unit persisting well past its practical moment. Within a few years it would be swept out entirely by decimal reform.
