Additional information

The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 1998, encompasses one of the most botanically dense regions on earth — the Cape Floristic Region, which contains more plant species per square kilometre than almost anywhere else on the planet. This coin is part of a sub-series distinguishing the terrestrial and marine components of the reserve, the latter covering the cold Benguela-influenced coastal waters off the Overberg coast where kelp forests and unique invertebrate communities define the ecology.

The Hern catalogue suffix "B" distinguishes this marine variant from its terrestrial counterpart, Nl40A, issued in the same year.
