| Obverse description | The post-apartheid South African coat of arms is depicted centrally in the field, supported by two figures and featuring the motto EX UNITATE VIRES at the base. Surrounding the central device, the name of the country appears in all nine official languages arranged in a circular legend filling the field: UMZANTSI AFRIKA, AFRIKA-DZONGA, AFRIKA BORWA, AFURIKA-TSHIPEMBE, AFERIKA BORWA, SOUTH AFRICA, ININGIZIMU AFRIKA, ISEWULA AFRIKA, and SUID-AFRIKA. The date 1998 is inscribed prominently in the lower portion of the field beneath the arms. The engraver's initials A.S. appear below the shield. The overall design was executed in proof finish with frosted devices against a mirror field. |
