South Africa's 1994 election — the first conducted under universal suffrage — ended nearly five decades of apartheid governance and brought the ANC to power under Nelson Mandela, who died just months before this commemorative was issued in December 2013. The twenty-year milestone it marks was politically charged: by 2014, the ANC's electoral dominance was beginning to fracture, with the Economic Freedom Fighters contesting their first national election that same year.
