Obverse description A crowned lion passant guardant to the left, seated in the field and holding a large key upright with its forepaw — the heraldic device of Gibraltar. The peripheral legend reads PAYABLE AT ROBERT KEELING & SONS · GIBRALTAR · in raised Latin capital letters, encircling the central device. The lion's tail curves prominently upward and the key is depicted in full detail, anchoring the composition to the lower left of the field.
