Additional information

Sudan's 1969 military coup, which brought Jaafar Nimeiry to power, prompted a sweeping redesign of the national coinage to signal a break from the previous parliamentary order. The 1971 issues were among the first coins fully realized under the new Revolutionary Command Council, replacing designs associated with the civilian government Nimeiry had overthrown. Production was contracted to the Royal Mint in the UK — an irony given that the revolution was explicitly anti-imperialist in its early ideological framing.
