A genuine minting error, not a collector fantasy piece. At some point during the 1972 production run, a reverse die was replaced — incorrectly — with a second obverse die, producing a coin with identical faces on both sides. Mules of this type emerge from alignment failures in the die-setting process, and the Saudi Mint's quality control of this period was not rigorous enough to catch every such pairing before pieces entered circulation.
Authenticated examples are rare. Most surface through circulation finds rather than mint bag discoveries.
