The Isle of Man has long used its fiscal autonomy to issue commemorative coinage well outside the remit of the Royal Mint, and this piece marks the centenary of women achieving equal voting rights with men in the United Kingdom — the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act passed in 1928. Catherine Callow, the designer, is a Manx artist, a deliberate choice given the island's own history: Manx women gained the right to vote in 1881, nearly four decades before their counterparts on the mainland.
