The White Lion of Mortimer is one of the ten heraldic beasts recreated for the Queen's Beasts programme, drawn from the supporters and badges assembled at the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. The original carved stone figures flanked the entrance to Westminster Abbey that day. This particular issue was struck by Pobjoy Mint for the Isle of Man, one of several territories licensed to produce coinage under the programme outside the Royal Mint's own run.
Pobjoy struck extensively for smaller Crown dependencies, often in bimetallic formats not used by the parent series.
