Reverse description A cruciform design composed of four heraldic shields arranged symmetrically around a central device bearing the arms of the Order of the Garter, encircled by the Garter motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. The design is modelled after the celebrated Gothic Crown coinage of 1847, originally engraved by William Wyon. The reverse legend, rendered in Fraktur blackletter script, reads tueatur unita deus anno dom mdcccxlvii, translating as 'May God Guard these United Kingdoms, Year of Our Lord 1847'. The initials W W for William Wyon and EIC for the East India Company appear in the design.
