Additional information

Part of Gibraltar's "Labours of Hercules" series issued around the turn of the millennium, this piece commemorates the ninth labour — the retrieval of the war-girdle belonging to Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. The myth carried particular political charge: Hera's interference, disguised among the Amazons to provoke war, turns a diplomatic mission fatal. Gibraltar's choice to serialize all twelve labours across bimetallic two-pound coins was a deliberate collector strategy, producing low-mintage issues with limited genuine circulation.
