Reverse description The reverse, designed by John Bergdahl, features a dramatic composition evoking Shakespearean tragedy: a large human skull in three-quarter profile dominates the inner silver field, with a detailed Tudor rose in bloom positioned beneath its jaw, its thorned stem extending across the lower field. The design alludes to themes of mortality and beauty central to Shakespeare's tragedies, including references to Hamlet. The legend WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE arcs around the upper border of the outer gilt ring, with the date 2016 displayed at the base, flanked by small floral ornaments. The engraver's initials JB appear discreetly in the lower right of the inner field.
