The Rugby Football Union was founded in 1871 at the Pall Mall Restaurant in London, a meeting convened specifically to settle disputes over rules that had been fracturing the game since the Webb Ellis mythology took hold at Rugby School decades earlier. Jersey has a genuine claim to the sport's culture — the island produced several notable players who represented the British Isles in the early international era, though the RFU itself remained an English administrative body throughout its history.
The 150th anniversary fell in 2021, a year when the Premiership season had only just resumed after COVID-19 cancellations gutted the 2019–20 campaign financially.
