| Reverse description | A finely detailed depiction of the Avro Vulcan B2 strategic bomber, serial number XM607, rendered in a dynamic low-angle flight attitude traversing the coin diagonally from lower left to upper right. The aircraft's distinctive delta wing planform, camouflage contour lines, and RAF roundel are rendered in high relief against a horizontally lined field. The two-tone piedfort design presents the central silver field in contrast with the gold-plated outer ring, which carries the inscription 'RAF 1918–2018' in the upper arc and 'VULCAN' in the lower arc. The engravers' combined initials 'NT+RT' appear in the lower right field. |

| Additional information |
The Avro Vulcan entered service in 1956 as Britain's airborne nuclear deterrent, one of three V-bombers developed under the same strategic requirement. By the time the type was retired in 1984, it had seen its only conventional combat in the 1982 Falklands War — the Black Buck raids, seven long-range bombing missions flown from Ascension Island, each requiring a fleet of Victor tankers to execute a single strike sortie of over 8,000 miles round trip.
Piedfort format doubles the standard specification, a practice the Royal Mint revived in the 1980s from medieval French precedent.
