The Avro Vulcan entered service in 1956 as Britain's airborne nuclear deterrent, one of three V-bombers developed under the same strategic requirement. By the time the type was retired in 1984, it had seen its only conventional combat in the 1982 Falklands War — the Black Buck raids, seven long-range bombing missions flown from Ascension Island, each requiring a fleet of Victor tankers to execute a single strike sortie of over 8,000 miles round trip.
Piedfort format doubles the standard specification, a practice the Royal Mint revived in the 1980s from medieval French precedent.
