Reverse description Central cameo-style effigy of Queen Mother Elizabeth, facing left, enclosed within a beaded oval frame, set against an abundant arrangement of fully bloomed and budding roses filling the field on both sides. The legend THE QUEEN MOTHER is inscribed to the upper left and NINETIETH BIRTHDAY to the upper right, with ALDERNEY · TWO POUNDS · arranged along the lower periphery. The composition, engraved by Michael Rizzello, combines the formal portrait with a naturalistic floral tribute befitting the commemorative occasion.

Additional information

Alderney — the smallest of the inhabited Channel Islands — began issuing commemorative coinage only in 1989, making this one of its earliest pieces. The Queen Mother's 90th birthday issue arrived when she was already the most publicly beloved member of the royal family, a reputation built largely on her refusal to leave London during the Blitz despite Buckingham Palace taking direct bomb hits in September 1940.

The .925 specification matches the standard set for Royal Mint commemorative issues of the period, with production almost certainly contracted through the same supply chain.
