Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of Winston Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches" speech — delivered to the House of Commons on 4 June 1940 — this Gibraltar coin draws on Churchill's particular connection to the Rock, which he visited multiple times and considered a strategically irreplaceable British outpost. The phrase "Let us go forward together" comes from his earlier broadcast of 19 May 1940, his first as Prime Minister.
Gibraltar has issued Churchill commemoratives with notable regularity since the 1970s, partly because the territory's own wartime siege history gives the subject local resonance beyond mere flag-waving.
