Reverse description A detailed central depiction of the steamship SS Autocarrier navigating open waters, rendered with fine engraving showing the vessel's masts, rigging, funnels, and hull amid stylized waves. To the left of the ship, a commemorative inscription is arranged in multiple lines across the field, evoking Winston Churchill's wartime broadcast. The date range 1945·1995 and the legend THE RETURN OF THE ISLANDERS·TWO POUNDS arc along the right periphery, while the words OUR DEAR CHANNEL ISLANDS ARE ALSO TO BE FREED are prominently inscribed in the field, completing the famous Churchill quotation.

Additional information

Alderney's entire civilian population was evacuated by the British government in June 1940, just days before German occupation — the only mass civilian evacuation of British territory in the Second World War. Unlike the other Channel Islands, Alderney remained almost completely depopulated under occupation, used largely for forced labor camps. Islanders who returned from 1945 onward came back to a community that had been methodically stripped bare. This 1995 issue marks the fiftieth anniversary of that return.
