Reverse description The stricken vessel Endurance is depicted beset and crushed in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea, her masts and rigging prominent against the frozen seascape. Carved in relief into the iceberg in the foreground is a portrait of Sir Ernest Shackleton, leader of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917. The commemorative legend and denomination appear within the design, marking the centenary of the expedition.
